Monogram Pumpkin

It’s un-officially pumpkin week at our house. Today my son and I carved and decorated pumpkins. A monogram pumpkin for me and a painted and felt pirate for him. Then I roasted pumpkin seeds which we’ll be snacking on all week (or at least through tomorrow) and later this week I’m making pumpkin bars – one of my very favorite fall treats!

It’s no secret that I like monograms , so it’s fitting that most years I carve some sort of monogram pumpkin for our front porch. It looks great lit up, and it’s one of the easiest things to carve. While I have patience for a lot of projects, for some reason pumpkin carving isn’t one I can give over several hours to, knowing it will last a few weeks at best.

I start by printing off a stencil made in Microsoft Word. I usually print a few sizes to see what will fit my pumpkin. Then I tape my stencil to my pumpkin. (If you have an initial that has pieces that will need to “hang” like the open part of a P or O, then I’d suggest using an actual stencil.)

Next I used a ball point pen to trace my stencil, pushing hard enough to score the lines onto my pumpkin. Then I removed the stencil and trace it with my pen. You could try to cut from the scored line, but I usually can’t see it quite well enough.

Next I used a sharp knife to carve around my traced monogram. To make removal of the cut out pieces easier, I cut straight lines next to the smaller pieces where I can.

I popped the top off and then cleaned my pumpkin out before carving it. You could do it first before drawing your stencil as well.

Even when you’re careful, sometimes if there are very small pieces that are holding up your design, they may come off. This happened to the bottom part of my H. No problem – I just used a toothpick to reattach. I broke my toothpick in half and inserted into the part that came off and then to the inside of my pumpkin.

Clean up any edges or extra pumpkin strings, and you’re done!

And here it is all lit up. It’s next to a pumpkin I did at a pumpkin carving party for work. I used different sized drill bits to try to make an ombre circles design.

Carter painted a pumpkin while I was carving. I had picked up a little stick-on pirate face in the dollar bin at Target. He loves to paint and it was a great day to be outside.

He went to town painting each side a little differently. He started out with a pretty good smiley face and then went pretty abstract everywhere else. Once he was done, we picked the side that he thought would look best with the pirate face. The side where he was mixing colors almost made it look like the pirate had a beard. I loved the felt stick on face. It would be easy enough to make yourself, but for $1, you really can’t beat it.

Include a definition of particular terms used in your charity’s purpose if those terms might not be generally understood or have more than one meaning. For example:

For the purpose of this clause, ‘socially excluded’ means…

Explain, or list, any other principles or values your purpose makes reference to. For example, where it says: “To advance education in accordance with x principles”

You usually write your charity’s purpose in the objects clause of its governing document (the legal document that creates the charity and says how it should be run).

Your charity’s purposes and its objects should be the same. The objects should accurately express all of your charity’s purposes.

Understand that for each separate purpose your charity has, you’ll need to demonstrate that:

Only list the purposes you need now as you can apply to the commission to Agnes Loafers Black Faith Outlet FarDBeZcZ
at the time you are ready to change your charity’s work.

You may want to include a wide purpose to cover your charity’s work. For example:

To further such other purposes which may be charitable according to the law of England and Wales as the trustees see fit from time to time

If you include this wide purpose, you will need to tell the commission how you, as trustees:

You may be using an approved governing document, as a branch of a national charity or which has been issued by an umbrella body. If so, make sure you get the permission of the body that issued it if you want to change the objects clause.

A perfectly written objects clause doesn’t automatically mean your organisation is a charity. You have to demonstrate that your charity’s purposes are for the public benefit and that it satisfies all other requirements for registration as a charity.

Equally, a badly written objects clause may not stop your organisation from being registered if it is clear that your organisation has only charitable purposes. It can be registered as a charity if you change the objects to fully and accurately state those charitable purposes.

Use one of the commission’s example objects if it accurately expresses your charity’s purpose – don’t change it.

But don’t use one if it doesn’t fit what your charity is set up to achieve. This could restrict what your charity can do - as trustees, you have a duty to work within your charity’s stated purposes.

Your charity’s ‘purpose’ is what it is set up to achieve. Its ‘powers’ are what it can do to help achieve the purpose, such as raise funds, buy property or borrow money.

The difference is that the powers are about how the charity operates; the purpose is about what it delivers.

For example, your charity’s powers may say how your charity will raise funds; its purpose says how it will use the funds it raises.

In your governing document, list your charity’s powers separately from its purposes.

Today, books contain less decoration and the readers can concentrate on what they are reading. He noted, it takes courage to leave out ornament and let the typography stand on its merits. Michael Russem’s full presentation can be read on his website .

Text pulled from John Dunlap’s broadside of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776, and Benjamin Towne’s Pennsylvania Evening Post, July 6, 1776. (Wikimedia Commons)

Most Americans can quote the beginning of the Declaration of Independence—“When in the course of human events…” But not everyone who was notified of the Declaration soon after its adoption on July 4,1776got exactly the same version. Emily Sneff of the Declaration Resources Project at Harvard University reported on analyses of the known broadside editions and newspaper reports of the Declaration published in July and August 1776.

The variations could be in spelling and even word choice, but more frequently in capitalization and punctuation. They started with the first word and continued throughout the various versions. The first word appeared in the first broadside printed by John Dunlap as [W]HEN with no punctuation, and in the first newspaper edition printed by Benjamin Towne as [W]HEN with a comma following. The bare minimum of capitalization was in the Maryland Gazette : of words such as God, Great Britain, English, Indian, British, etc. for less than 10 words total. By comparison, Dunlap’s Pennsylvania Packet had over 50 capitalized words, and over 300 words were capitalized in Dunlap’s broadside.

The text of the Declaration of Independence spread through the newly United States over the course of a few weeks, with newspaper editions first appearing as follows: in Pennsylvania, July 6; Maryland, July 9; New York, July 10; Connecticut, July 12; Rhode Island, July 13; Massachusetts, July 16; Virginia, July 20; and South Carolina, August 2 (there are no known newspaper editions from New Jersey, Delaware, North Carolina, or Georgia). The Declaration was first published in non-English form in the Pennsylvanischer Staatbote in Philadelphia on July 9, and in book form by Robert Bell in Philadelphia on July 8.

These variations among these early editions of the Declaration of Independence are significant because of the sheer number of 1776 printings; of all the known broadside, newspaper, and book editions of the Declaration produced from 1776-1800, nearly half were produced in July and August 1776.

Some of the early broadside printings of the Declaration included state resolutions about the approbation, distribution, and public reading of the Declaration. In Massachusetts, for example, The Council adopted the following on July 17, 1776: “ORDERED, that the Declaration of Independence be printed ; and a Copy sent to the ministers of each parish, of every Denomination, within this STATE ; and they severally be required to read the same to their respective Congregations, as soon as divine Service is ended, in the Afternoon, on the first Lord’s-Day after they shall have received it : –And after such publication thereof, to deliver the said declaration to the Clerks of their several Towns or Districts ; who are hereby required to record the same in their respective Town, or District Books, there to remain as a perpetual MEMORIAL thereof.”
